Not only are we dedicated to fighting algae but we are also dedicated to raising awareness to an important part of Florida’s natural ECOsystem, the sea turtle. South Florida’s coast is home for five species of sea turtles that nest on our local beaches each year. Sea turtles return to the same beach where they were born to nest, year after year, throughout their lifetime. Our human impact on our beaches is the biggest threat these turtles face.
Here are some ways to help:
- Remove trash and obstacles from the beach
- Flatten any sand castles, fill in any holes after playing in the sand
- Don’t release balloons into the air; they often end up in the ocean looking like jellyfish (the loggerhead’s favorite food)
- Avoid nests and nesting turtles. Lights scare and disorient the turtles.
There are many local rescue and rehabilitation organizations dedicated to protecting these turtles that offer fun and interactive opportunities to the public. As we participate in some of these activities we invite you join us. You can find out more information at any of these local organizations:
